![]() ![]() The route was taken by the Earl Marischal and Marquess of Montrose when they led a Covenanter army of over 9,000 men in the first battle of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms in 1639. This ancient passage specifically connected the Bridge of Dee to Cowie Castle via the Portlethen Moss and the Stonehaven central plaza. The town lies at the southern origin of the ancient Causey Mounth trackway, which was built on high ground to make passable this only available medieval route from coastal points south of Aberdeen. The fossil was about 420 million years old. That same year, researchers at the National Museums of Scotland and Yale University announced that a fossil found by an amateur paleontologist the previous year was the earliest known fossil of a land-dwelling animal. The burials contained stone tool artifacts and shale/cannel coal beads. Radiocarbon dating put the burials in the first half of the 2nd millennium BC, which was the Early Bronze Age in Scotland. In 2004, archaeological work by CFA Archaeology, in advance of the building of the Aberdeen to Lochside Natural Gas Pipeline, found two short cists burials containing cremated remains to the southwest of Stonehaven. Stonehaven is the site of prehistoric events evidenced by finds at Fetteresso Castle and Neolithic pottery excavations from the Spurryhillock area. It is known informally to locals as Stoney. As late as the 16th century, old maps indicate the town was called Stonehyve, Stonehive, Timothy Pont also adding the alternative Duniness. Stonehaven had grown around an Iron Age fishing village, now the "Auld Toon" ("old town"), and expanded inland from the seaside. It is currently administered as part of the Aberdeenshire Council Area. Īfter the demise of the town of Kincardine, which was gradually abandoned after the destruction of its royal castle in the Wars of Independence, the Scottish Parliament made Stonehaven the successor county town of Kincardineshire. City staff presented the master plan draft to the PRAB in June and September 2020. A second letter was sent to the neighborhood, giving residents near Stonehaven Park an opportunity for public comment on the conceptual master plan prepared by Benesch. The Master Plan recommends developing passive park amenities around this feature.Ĭity of Manhattan Public Works and the Parks and Recreation Department planned to host a neighborhood meeting in March 2020 to review the master plan concept but the meeting was canceled due to COVID-19. The central feature of the park is a spring-fed pond. The new park offers recreational opportunities for Manhattan residents, especially for those who live nearby in Miller Ranch or in the future Stonehaven development. In June 2020, PRAB reviewed the design concepts and accepted the recommendation to name the park and pond Stonehaven Park and Bayer Pond. to create a master plan design concept for Stonehaven Park. In July 2019, the City engaged Alfred Benesch & Company, Inc. In October 2018, the City Commission accepted the 15-acre land donation. In June 2017, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board (PRAB) recommended that the City accept the parkland donation. Bike lanes and sidewalks from the surrounding lots will lead to the new parkland. The future subdivision is planned to be residential with a small commercial component. ![]() The proposal included a donation of parkland, including a 3-acre pond, to the City. In 2017, the City of Manhattan received a proposal for a new subdivision near Miller Parkway and Highway K-18. ![]()
